Two studios, one bench

MuggsOfDreams.net makes free one-page sites for New Orleans: a menu, a schedule, a way to be found. Most people need exactly that and nothing more.

Some ideas need more room. A krewe with members to keep track of. A group that needs to plan together. A business that needs people to sign in, book, upload or talk to each other. That's what MindsEye.studio is for.

The ladder

Every build starts on the first rung, and plenty never need to climb. The first rung is what the base build includes. Each rung up puts more behind the page, costs more, and you climb only as far as the idea asks.

Rung 1 · no backend In the base build

A site that stands on its own

Nothing running behind it, nothing to break.

1a

Landing page

Sketched with you on graph paper first, then built to match.

1b

Animations

Motion that makes it feel alive, and holds still for anyone who asks for less.

1c

Email at your domain

You@yourname.com, forwarded to the inbox you already use.

1d

Words and pictures kept current

Your text and photos change as you do, so the page never goes stale.

1e

Event banners and calendars

What's coming up, front and center, with a way to add it to a calendar.

Rung 2 · a simple backend Added cost

A site that remembers

A small database behind the page, so what people send is kept and lists stay current.

2a

Forms that go somewhere

Sign-ups and inquiries that land in a database and your inbox.

2b

Rosters and records

Lists that stay current without anyone editing a page.

2c

Sign-in

Members-only pages, behind a sign-in.

Rung 3 · a fuller backend Added cost

A site people work in together

Many people signed in at once, each seeing and doing different things.

3a

Roles

Different people allowed to see and do different things.

3b

Discussion boards

Threads, replies and private corners for the people who need them.

3c

Tasks and plans

Ideas caught fast, work handed out, things checked off.

3d

Photos and files

Shared privately, seen only by the people they're meant for.

Field note · recent work

Krewe of Bulbancha: a public site for a new New Orleans krewe, with a members area behind it. Sign-in, a roster built as people join, discussion boards, a planning corner with tasks, and private photo sharing.

From hello to a proof

You don't get dropped into a template. You build your site with me, one step at a time, and you can watch every step on your own dashboard.

  1. Step 1

    The interest form

Who you are, what you do, and where people find you now. I read all of it before I ask you anything.

  2. Step 2

    Your intake

Written just for you from what you sent: facts to check, questions only you can answer, your photos.

  3. Step 3

    Your sketch

Every page drawn in pencil on graph paper. Retype the words, swap the photos, try fonts, stick notes.

  4. Step 4

    The proof

The real site, built from your sketch. Stick a note on anything that isn't right; until you sign off, every note is free.

Bought, not rented

The goal of this studio is to sell you a site, not rent you one.

When a site starts to feel like a subscription

A lot of websites are built on a monthly plan. The site and the plan come together: you pay every month, and the site is there. Over time it's easy for that to feel like a subscription, where what you're paying for is mostly the site staying up. And once you stop paying, it's just as easy to let the whole thing go with it.

But you own your domain

True. Your domain is yours, and holding on to it may be part of why the monthly payment keeps going. You can always transfer it out. But transfer it to where? A domain is an address. It needs a site to point to, and if the site never felt like something you could take with you, the address has nowhere to go.

The rock in your shoe

Then there's the site most people know too well.

  1. OneYou're not comfortable with it.
  2. TwoYou know it needs fixing.
  3. ThreeYou're too busy to stop and deal with it.
  4. FourIt doesn't hurt enough to stop everything else. So you live with it.

Taking the rock out

Here you build the site with me, on paper first, and when you sign off on the proof you buy it: every page and every file is yours. A site you made yourself, and can change yourself, is a lot harder to stop caring about. When something goes stale, it's a quick fix, not a project you keep putting off.

The product and the price

Thirty dollars a month

Someone told me recently that they pay $30 a month to keep their site up and running. That's $1,080 over three years. Keep a site up for a decade and it's $3,600. And if they ever left, what would they leave with?

The product

Your site's codebase, in a GitHub repository shared with you. You can copy it, share it, or bring it somewhere else to manage and host it for you.

You own your codebase.

You own your domain.

How do you get a domain?

Either you have one already, or I register one for you on Cloudflare. Either way, the domain belongs to you.

Free and clear

At any time, I box up your site and deliver it to you, free and clear.

A note on SEO

I don't charge for SEO, and I don't claim it. No promises about rankings. What I do is build smart, clean sites, the kind search engines find easiest to read: a clean codebase, fast pages, and smart FAQ pages that answer the questions people actually ask about you.

The fee schedule

My goal is simple: always come in well under what three years of building and hosting your site on one of the popular platforms would cost.

There's no monthly plan. You buy the site once, when it's right, and then pay only for what you choose to add.

Steps 1 to 4

Interest form, intake, sketch, proof

Building it with me, and every note you stick on the proof until you sign off.

Nothing
At sign-off

The base build

A Rung 1 site: everything on the first rung of the ladder. Your codebase, every page and every file, in a GitHub repository shared with you. Three years online, and help getting your domain or moving the one you have. Change your own words and photos as often as you like, and 25 sticky notes for the bigger jobs. Sticky notes never expire.

$500
Or

The codebase only

The same codebase, yours to host wherever you like.

$450
Up the ladder

Rungs 2 and 3

Anything with a backend: forms that land in a database, rosters, sign-in, roles, boards, tasks, private photos and files. Not in the base build; priced for your build before you start.

Added cost
After that

Stay on MindsEye, or walk

Keep changing your own words and photos. More sticky notes come in packs of 25 for $20. Or take the code and go.

Your call

That's less than half of three years at $30 a month, and at the end of it the site is still yours.

Your domain renews each year with whoever holds it, the way every domain does.
